SonRise supports the ministry of Daylight Center and School in northern Kenya which exists to bring peace, education, and hope in the name of Jesus to nomadic children who are otherwise left to survive with no education and in a life of tribal warfare.
This is an “inland” (far from tribal boundaries) watering hole. All Pokot, but many families travel for miles with their livestock for water. They have quite a system for taking turns, and set times for each kind of animal. Rachel is pictured with Pembe, a Daylight Center and School student. They are meeting his mother and family at this dam for a visit. Pembe was badly and permanently injured at the age of 2 when armed bandits came to his village to steal cattle. During the frightening chaos, Pembe ran into the cooking fire and was badly burned and subsequently had his foot amputated. By the time he was 4 years old, he became too heavy for his mother to carry and the rocky ground proved too difficult for Pembe to walk. It was her prayer for Pembe to be able to go to school. When Daylight Director, Michael Kimpur found out about Pembe, he traveled to Pembe’s village and invited him to Daylight. That was 1 1/2 years ago and Pembe is now healthy, has many friends and is learning to read and write.
