“Share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus.” (2 Timothy 2:3 ESV). In our journey through most of the Bible we have had the privilege of tracing God’s Story of rescue from creation to the cross. We experienced the resurrection and the birth of the church. Last week we saw that God desires his church to engage our culture with a message of hope. Paul set an example of this in each place he took the gospel message. Yet Paul also set an example of suffering. He endured imprisonment, beatings, stoning, a shipwreck, and was often in danger of losing his life. Through all of this he was faithful to take the gospel to the Gentiles. His confidence was such that he could say at the end of his life, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” (2 Timothy 4:7 ESV). This week we encounter his story of suffering and seek to understand what motivated him to endure such suffering. And we will connect this with God’s glory and purpose in allowing suffering in our lives. I hope to see you there.
